STEFAN PLENKERS (1945 Ebern – 2024 Kreischa) Drunken Sailors, 1975 Oil on hardboard. 40 x 45 cm. Framed. Signed and dated (19)75 on the lower right. Labeled on the reverse. In 1980, art historian Diether Schmidt called Stefan Plenkers the leading figure of the young Dresden school of printmaking and painting. Plenkers came to painting through printmaking, and this influence is evident in his works. This work depicts a wet, blue-gray, reflective alley leading into the distance. A dark row of houses rises on the left. The painting dates from a pivotal year: in 1975, Plenkers returned to Dresden after spending several years in Bad Muskau and Cottbus.
