PHILIPPE PASQUA (1965, Grasse; based in Lisbon) Philippine, 2014 Mixed media (charcoal/oil pastels) on paper, mounted on canvas, unevenly varnished. 200 x 150 cm. Framed behind acrylic glass. Signed, dated, and with work details on the back of the canvas. Philippe Pasqua is self-taught and works outside academic traditions; the recurring theme of his work is the human face and body, depicted in large format and from close up. The effect arises from the interplay of scale and resolution. Up close, they are lines, smudges, and splatters; from a distance, a face of great physical presence.
