OTTO MÜLLER (1874 Liebau – 1930 Breslau) Potsdam Art Summer, 1921 Original woodcut on handmade paper. 95.2 x 69.3 cm. Copy 11/30. Hand-printed by Galerie Thomas, Munich, 2007. Stamped on the reverse by Galerie Thomas. Catalog: Karsch 6 Provenance: Galerie Nierendorf Otto Müller is considered one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism. He was a member of the “Brücke” artists’ group and served as a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts and Applied Arts in Breslau. The woodcut depicts a female figure crouching on the ground, rising up among broad, reed-like leaves—the body and the plants almost merge into one another, with the figure’s slender contours continuing into the tapering leaves. This is typical of Mueller, who repeatedly depicted the human body in close connection with nature, water, and vegetation—far removed from urban civilization—as a being that develops organically from its surroundings. As a promotional poster for an exhibition in Sanssouci Park, the print thus links the theme of the art show itself—nature, gardens, summer—with Mueller’s personal, recurring visual language of the nature-loving figure.
