AXEL KASSEBÖHMER (1952 Herne – 2017 Munich) Floor, 1982 Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard. 70 x 295 cm. Label on the back. Since the late 1970s, Kasseböhmer drew his motifs not from nature but from art history: from paintings by Fra Angelico and van Eyck, Caravaggio, and Tintoretto. He selected details within these works that no one notices and enlarged them into independent paintings—the breakthrough in his work and the reason why he had such a lasting impact on the Cologne art scene of the 1980s. “Floor” depicts precisely such a detail, taken from Sandro Botticelli’s painting “The Annunciation” from 1489–1490. Set on a terracotta and cream-white tiled floor, whose grout lines recede into the distance in strict perspective. What remains is pure painting: the drapery, the color, and the grid of perspective.
