SUSANNE KANDT-HORN (1914 Eisenach – 1996 Ückeritz) Athletes and Women by the Sea, 1967/71 Oil on hardboard. 60 x 69 cm. Framed. Monogrammed and dated “1967 – Feb. 71” in the upper left corner. Inscribed, titled, signed, and dated on the reverse, and includes a label. Provenance: Falk Horn (the artist’s son); private collection, Hesse The painting depicts four highly stylized, archaic, and monumental figures against an atmospheric seascape. There are two men and two women, two of whom are holding a ball—a piece of sports equipment—in their hands. The clear, ornamental lines, the minimalist formal language reminiscent of ancient sculpture and Mediterranean mythology, and the warm, earthy color palette set against the cool blue-green of the sea create a timeless, mythical, almost ritualistic atmosphere —the composition reads less as a concrete everyday scene on the beach than as a symbolic gathering of idealized human figures that combine strength, fertility, and contemplation.
