WILLY JAECKEL (1888 Breslau – 1944 Berlin) Mountain Landscape Oil on hardboard. 47.5 x 35.5 cm. Signed lower right. In German Expressionist landscape painting, it was not fidelity to nature that mattered, but color as an independent medium—and Jaeckel, one of the leading figures of this movement, demonstrates this here in a small format. The colors are not based on observation but are deliberately chosen: violet mountains, an orange background, turquoise shadows. They hold the painting together and give the small panel a luminosity one would not expect given its size.
