TORSTEN HOLTZ (1973 Berlin, based in Potsdam-Babelsberg) DSM IV, 2010 Oil on canvas. 75 x 80 cm. Framed. Monogrammed and dated (20)10 in the lower right corner. Signed by the artist, titled, and dated on the back of the gallery label. Torsten Holtz studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and graduated as a master student of Volker Stelzmann. “DSM-IV” is the title of a handbook: The “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” is the international standard reference work for the classification of mental disorders. Holtz applies this clinical, diagnostic title to a painting depicting an adult man wearing water wings—thereby deliberately opening up a space for interpretation between clinical findings and portraiture. He is equipped like a child who cannot swim—a swim cap, goggles perched on his forehead, two bright red water wings over his upper arms. But underneath, he wears a T-shirt and jeans: he is clearly not going into the water. The arm floats become a metaphor for a fear of “going under” that has never been fully overcome, and the serious, almost rigid gaze transforms the supposedly comical subject into a quiet study of vulnerability and security in adult life.
