JOHANNES GRÜTZKE (1937 Berlin – 2017, ibid.) Self-Portrait, 1987 Oil on canvas. 40 x 50 cm. Monogrammed and dated lower right. Signed and dated “19.1.1987” on the reverse. In 1973, Johannes Grützke founded the School of New Splendor together with Manfred Bluth, Matthias Koeppel, and Karlheinz Ziegler, which advocated a satirical realism laced with irony. In 1990, he served as a founding member of the Artists’ Association in Germany. In addition to painting and printmaking, he worked as a set designer; the self-portrait is one of the recurring themes in his work. The small-format work shows the head in a close-up view, gazing directly at the viewer. The left ear is grotesquely enlarged, the nose elongated, the chin massive; the glasses are draped across the face like a quick gray loop. Noteworthy is the combination of caricature and seriousness. Grützke exaggerates his own features to the point where they become comical, yet keeps his gaze and expression completely impassive.
