SIGHARD GILLE (1941 Eilenburg, works in Leipzig) Puppet Table, 1993 Mixed media on canvas. 160 x 210 cm. Framed. Monogrammed and dated (19)93 on the lower right. Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse. Sighard Gille has shaped the Leipzig art scene since the 1970s with a distinctive, color-rich visual language. He became known primarily for his monumental murals, including the ceiling painting in Leipzig’s Gewandhaus. He studied under Bernhard Heisig and Wolfgang Mattheuer; his works are represented, among other places, in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Following his stays in South Africa in the early 1990s, the intensity of color in his work increased significantly. In “Puppentisch,” Gille unfolds a dense riot of color from which garish reds and oranges burst forth like flaming signals. It remains unclear which of the figures are the dolls—the objects on the table sometimes bear human features, while animal-like forms appear throughout the room.
