KLAUS FUSSMANN (born 1938 in Velbert; works in Gelting and Berlin) By the Campfire, 2021 Watercolor on handmade paper. 21.5 x 30.2 cm. Framed with the artwork mounted behind glass in a mat. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Against a dense, dark-green background, a minimalist scene unfolds: Two childlike figures are crouched on the ground, facing a small fire. The flame dissolves into a bright, almost cloud-like trail of color that stretches across the sheet, lending the painting an unexpected dynamism. Typical of Fussmann is his focus on the colorful atmosphere rather than on detailed rendering: the figures are suggested with a few soft, blending brushstrokes; faces and bodies remain shadowy. Crucial is the interplay between the bold green areas and the warm yellow and orange of the fire, which is not presented in a narrative manner but is brought to the center as a colorful source of energy—a small, intense moment of human warmth in the midst of the quiet landscape.
