PAVEL FEINSTEIN (1960 Moscow – 2026 Berlin) Reclining Nude, 2011 Oil on canvas. 60 x 70 cm. Framed. Signed and dated (20)11 on the lower left. Labeled with the artist’s name and dated on the back of the gallery tag. Feinstein was regarded as an old master among Berlin’s contemporary painters—an artist who never wavered in his commitment to oil painting and developed his paintings directly from the paint itself, without preliminary sketches. The reclining nude is one of the oldest subjects in this tradition, and traditionally, the subject faces the viewer—she knows she is being seen and presents herself. In this painting, Feinstein completely reverses this arrangement. Here we see a person who is alone—and the viewer is transformed from the intended recipient into an uninvolved witness.
