WALTER EISLER (1954 Leipzig (born Walter Heisig) – 2015, ibid.) The City of Fire, 1991 Oil on canvas. 130 x 80 cm. Artist’s stretcher. Signed lower left. Titled, signed, and dated on the reverse (white overpaint) and partially backed (approx. 8 cm). Walter Eisler, son of Bernhard Heisig and brother of Johannes Heisig, studied at the Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Design in Leipzig under, among others, his father, Arno Rink, and Wolfgang Peuker. In “Die Feuerstadt,” against the backdrop of the Leipzig School, the experience of the period of political transition is condensed into an expressive image of upheaval. The frozen scarecrow stands above a dissolving urban landscape depicted in turbulent colors.
