JIRI GEORG DOKOUPIL (born 1954 in Krnov, Czechoslovakia; based in Madrid) Untitled Soap suds and pigment on canvas. 90 x 120 cm. Signed on the back at the top of the folded-over canvas. Provenance: Private collection, Bavaria In this painting, Dokoupil pushes the technique to its limits. The bubbles fill the surface right up to the edges, overlap, lie one on top of the other with their translucent skins, and are cut off on all four sides. What is visible continues beyond the canvas. The color is equally rich. Deep carmine red pools along the left edge, at the top right, and at the bottom left, with softly fading contours, while the bubbles have sharp edges. Above them are six clearly defined circles in ochre and gold, which stand out as distinct forms against the gray shapes. From within individual bubbles, dots glow in green, magenta, and violet, as if the light were coming from behind through the skin. In the lower right, a light blue shape pushes its way in. The gaze does not focus on individual objects within the black; it enters a throng—as if into foam or a cell culture.
