FRITZ CREMER (1906 Arnsberg – 1993 Berlin) Mother of a Soldier (Seated), 1939 Bronze, with a black-brown patina. 25.5 x 20 x 21 cm. Monogrammed “FC” on the back and on the left side. Catalog No.: P 39_07 Fritz Cremer is considered one of the most important sculptors of the GDR and created portraits of figures such as Friedrich Engels and Bertolt Brecht. His group of figures for the Buchenwald Memorial and the memorial to the Mauthausen concentration camp are among the best-known memorials to the victims of National Socialism. The sculpture is designed in a closed, almost block-like form and is strongly reminiscent of the monumental sculptures by Ernst Barlach and Käthe Kollwitz. The mother sits on the ground or on a low pedestal and is shrouded in a cloth that extends from her head to her feet. Her entire posture embodies passive endurance and sadness. This is not a proud, triumphant mother figure, but a broken figure mourning an irreversible loss—a powerful memorial against war.
