KURT BUNGE (1911 Bitterfeld – 1998 Kassel) Beach Oil on wood panel. 75 x 100 cm. Framed. A small pinhole (0.1 cm) on the lower right edge. Verso : Still Life with Flowers Oil on wood panel. 93 x 67.7 cm. Signed and dated (Halle) on the lower left of the frame strip. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse Kurt Bunge was a painter, graphic artist, and restorer who taught as a professor of painting at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle, where he himself had studied under Charles Crodel and Gerhard Marcks. He later moved to Kassel. The appeal of this painting lies in the interplay between structure and surface. Bunge transforms the wooden frames of the boats into a network of lines that stretches across the vast expanses of sand, water, and sky; the figures remain small and faceless, serving only to provide a sense of scale.
