EUGEN BRACHT (1842 Morges, Switzerland – 1921 Darmstadt) Old Trees on the Lakeside Oil on hardboard. 36.5 x 46 cm. Framed. Signed lower left. Stamped and labeled on the reverse. Eugen Bracht was one of the leading landscape painters of the German Empire. For nearly two decades, he taught as a professor at the Berlin Academy of Arts, and from 1901 onward served as director of the master studio at the Dresden Academy. His body of work ranges from small depictions of trees and woodlands to monumental panoramas and industrial scenes. This painting belongs to the first of these groups. Here we see a dense grove of trees that opens up to a clearing on the left and right, revealing a view of calm waters in the middle ground. The diffuse, warm light of the sky—presumably a morning or evening scene—penetrates the foliage and creates a picturesque backlighting effect that makes the silhouettes of the trees stand out in sharp contrast. The loose, impasto brushwork and the restrained, earthy-green color palette are characteristic of Bracht’s art, which oscillates between naturalism and atmospheric painting. The compositional opening in the center of the painting—a “window” through the trees—symbolically draws the eye into the depth of the scene and conveys a sense of tranquility, contemplation, and undisturbed natural idyll.
