PIETRO BAZZANTI (1825 Florence – 1895 ibid.) Carmen, 19th century Alabaster. 126 x 41 x 44 cm. Inscribed on the back: “P. Bazzanti, Florence.” One finger is broken off; the bodice is slightly chipped along the edge. Both broken finger fragments are present without any missing pieces and are available for professional restoration. This is not a cast but the original work. Pietro Bazzanti was a central figure in Florentine sculpture at the end of the 19th century. His workshop gave rise to the Galleria Bazzanti, which has existed since 1822 and for which Cesare Lapini, Ferdinando Vichi, and Guglielmo Pugi also worked. The sculpture depicts a young woman whose movement seems frozen in stone—the tambourine at her feet alludes to the dance from which she has just emerged. Her clothing is rendered with a fine sense of the textures of different fabrics; the base is rounded and naturalistic, framed by relief foliage.
