HANS BALUSCHEK (1870 Breslau – 1935 Berlin) Factory Workers on the Riverbank Watercolor and pastel on paper. 31.5 x 47.5 cm. Framed under glass. Signed lower right. Slight creases. Small tears at the lower corners The sheet depicts a section of a Berlin canal bank. The figures are tiny, faceless, and not centered; instead, they are partially obscured by the embankment wall. In this way, Baluschek gives the motif exactly the weight it held in the cityscape: factory work as a matter-of-fact, unremarkable part of Berlin’s outskirts.
