Cady Noland (American, 1956) Patty Hearst – 1991 Silkscreen on paper 101,6 x 45,7 cm Provenance: Paula Cooper Gallery, New York (FIAC, Paris 1992) The Robert and Suzanne Pannier Collection, Bruges Exhibited: Wiels, Brussels, Unexchangeable, 19 April 2018 - 12 August 2018 This work features appropriated media imagery documenting Patricia Hearst, the publishing heiress who was kidnapped in 1974 by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) and subsequently integrated into their militant activities. Utilizing the mechanical silkscreen method, Noland replicates newsprint documentation to explore the boundaries between criminality, celebrity, and public consumption. Rather than offering a traditional portrait, the composition treats Hearst as a highly charged cultural artifact, isolating the media’s own language to expose the psychological alienation and systemic violence underlying modern American history.
