Ivan MARCHUK (born in 1936) New Expressions Acrylic on canvas 60 x 50 cm Ivan Marchuk is a world-renowned Ukrainian painter, ranked among the 100 living geniuses by the British newspaper *The Daily Telegraph*. He is one of the founders of the Ukrainian avant-garde, a recipient of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize in 1997, and was named People’s Artist of Ukraine in 2002. Painted in 2024, this canvas belongs to the Maestro’s very latest creative period, dubbed “New Expressions.” Breaking away from the tranquility of his traditional winter landscapes, Marchuk presents here an abstract composition of explosive power. Against a deep black background, dynamic interlacing patterns of vibrant colors collide in a gesture of total freedom. It is a powerful testament to an undiminished creativity that continues to challenge conventions. Maestro Ivan Marchuk, who has just celebrated his 90th birthday, is a giant in art history and a living legend. He developed his own style, called “pleuntanizm,” derived from the Ukrainian word pleuntaty, meaning “to entangle.” His works, celebrated in more than 150 solo exhibitions worldwide, are held in the world’s leading museums and major institutional collections.
