BARRY, THE MOST COMPLETE CAMPTOSAUR EVER AUCTIONED

Friday 20 October 2023
Thirty years ago, Steven Spielberg introduced French audiences to "real-life" dinosaurs on the big screen. This global success gave birth to a six-film cinematic saga and captivated entire generations, igniting their passion for paleontology.
To mark this anniversary, Giquello auction house and expert Iacopo Briano will offer a new, exceptional specimen at auction on October 20th at the Hôtel Drouot. Kept out of the public eye until now, Barry, the unique lot of this unprecedented sale, makes its first appearance at a public auction.

Following iconic sales like the triceratops Big John (2021), the "living room dinosaur" Zephyr (2022), and the allosaurus Big Sara (2020), it's now Barry's turn to take center stage in the eighth dinosaur auction at the Hôtel Drouot. This skeleton will take you on a scientific investigation spanning nearly 200 years.
Barry is an adult specimen of Camptosauridae, belonging to the iguanodontid family, one of the earliest dinosaur groups to be discovered. Several theories have emerged regarding the representation of these animals. Prominent paleontologists throughout the 19th and 20th centuries debated the mode of locomotion and balance of the iguanodontids: were they bipedal or quadrupedal? What did the position of their tails reveal about their way of moving? How did the natural environment influence the development of the species? It was a quest for truth in which our specimen participated, ultimately becoming, in 2023, a witness to a major scientific breakthrough in the understanding of iguanodontids.
