ADER — La Collection Gérard Depardieu

A pproximately 250 lots will be offered for sale on September 26 and 27 by the Ader auction house for the dispersal of actor Gérard Depardieu's art collection. The auction will take place at Hôtel Drouot in room 9 and will feature names from the art scene such as Rodin, Duchamp, Calder, Miró, Leroy... Among the highlights of the sale is a bronze piece by Germaine Richier estimated to be worth between €500,000 and €800,000.This is a constantly evolving collection created through encounters, film projects, and events that have marked his life. To explain the acquisition of a very colorful work by Henri MASSON, the actor explains that he was reading Matisse and felt the need and desire for colors and energy. Gérard Depardieu doesn't buy with speculative intentions; he acquires artworks that move him and touch him, prioritizing pieces with which he feels in harmony. He doesn't limit himself to a particular style or movement but follows his instinct, allowing himself to be carried away by enthusiasm.Matter plays an important role in this collection, characterized by its irregular, misshapen and rough appearance. Whether in sculpture - with the three bronzes by RODIN acquired after playing the artist - or in painting, Depardieu seeks out works where matter takes precedence; he would say "Leroy, it's not even painting, it's matter". Eugène LEROY is particularly present in the actor's collection, with an exceptional group of 23 canvases, 7 etchings and one sculpture.

The actor claims to "love to see line", and indeed, 5 works by CALDER, including a gouache entitled L'Étoile, and 4 works by MIRO perfectly express this interest in line. The love of geometry is also reflected in the cubist works of Louis MARCOUSSIS and Ossip ZADKINE's Kneeling Woman. Gérard Depardieu's collection also stands out for its choice of remarkable works, such as Odile REDON's Vase de fleurs, and a composition by Nikki de SAINT PHALLE dating from 1959.
