Until June 30 at Drouot: a world tour of artistic expressions

J une continues at the Hôtel Drouot under the sign of diversity and discovery, bringing together masterpieces of Antiquity, royal decorative arts, modern painting and twentieth-century design. Through an exceptionally rich programme, the auction houses invite collectors and enthusiasts on a journey across centuries and continents, from the Roman world to contemporary creation.

From imperial Chinese jades to Sèvres porcelain commissioned by King Louis-Philippe as a gift to the Shah of Persia, and from a royal commode delivered to the Château de Rambouillet to the modernist creations of Michel Dufet, the decorative arts engage in dialogue with painting and sculpture. Highlights include an exceptional imperial cameo depicting Emperor Claudius, works by Renoir, Utrillo, Bonnard and Dufy, as well as creations by César, Alina Szapocznikow and Geer van Velde.

This June programme offers a true journey through the many expressions of artistic creation, with each stop revealing new discoveries and perspectives.

Baron Reverdito will present its Art Classique & Collections sale on 17 June, bringing together paintings, works of art, antique jewellery and historical memorabilia. The auction will be led by an exceptional Roman imperial cameo, eighteenth-century portraits and a selection of precious objects reflecting collectors’ enduring fascination with Antiquity and the European decorative arts.

The undisputed highlight is a spectacular five-layer sardonyx imperial cameo depicting Emperor Claudius, carved in the first half of the 1st century AD (lot 130, estimate: €80,000–120,000). Remarkably refined in its execution, the gem portrays the fourth Roman emperor wearing a laurel wreath and an aegis adorned with the head of Medusa.

The sale also features several notable examples of French painting. Two portraits by Antoine Vestier, depicting Isabelle and Joseph Depestre and dated 1785 and 1787 (lots 140 and 141), demonstrate the talent of one of the most sought-after portraitists of the late Ancien Régime. A painting from the late eighteenth century, executed in the circle of Carle Van Loo and depicting a Sacrifice to Love (estimate: €8,000–12,000), completes this section devoted to classical painting.

Audap & Associés will hold its Collections & Œuvres Classiques sale on 18 and 19 June, bringing together works of art, paintings, tapestries, porcelain and Asian works of art.

A group of twelve Chinese jades (lots 337–348) forms one of the highlights of the auction, illustrating the exceptional place occupied by jade within imperial Chinese culture. Associated for centuries with the Confucian virtues of wisdom, integrity and purity, jade remains one of the most prestigious materials in Chinese art. The sale will also include significant works from the European artistic heritage, notably a Flemish tapestry dating from around 1500 depicting the Murder of Louis, Duke of Orléans, on 23 November 1407 (lot 352, estimate: €10,000–15,000), together with two altar wings depicting Saint Veronica and Saint Mary Magdalene, executed around 1530 (lot 17, estimate: €15,000–20,000). Two portraits by Louis Carrogis de Carmontelle (lots 53 and 54), preserved within the descendants’ family, will be offered alongside four Venetian Capricci by Giacomo Guardi (lot 124, estimate: €15,000–20,000).

The decorative arts will be represented by an exceptional group of Sèvres porcelain pieces (lots 105–109) from the celebrated Déjeuner de l’Éloge de la Rose, commissioned by King Louis-Philippe as a gift to the Shah of Persia. The sale will conclude with a remarkable group of Japanese maki-e lacquer tea caddies and boxes (lots 293–336), showcasing the refinement of this “sprinkled picture” technique, in which gold and silver powders create extraordinarily delicate decoration.

The Great Names of Modern Art

Blanchet & Associés - Modern Paintings and Contemporary Art  I June 19 2026

Blanchet & Associés will dedicate its 19 June sale to Modern Paintings and Contemporary Art, bringing together a selection of Impressionist, Modern and Figurative works from several private collections. The auction is notably highlighted by the presence of a major sculpture by Edgar Degas and a rare painting by Pierre Bonnard, alongside works by Paul Aïzpiri, Volti and Gen Paul.

Among the leading lots is Dancer, Open Arabesque on the Right Leg, Right Arm on the Ground by Edgar Degas (estimate: €200,000–300,000). Through his celebrated series of arabesques, Degas explored muscular tension, controlled imbalance and the architecture of the body in motion. The sale will also feature Pierre Bonnard’s Au café, an oil on paper laid down on panel executed circa 1901 (estimate: €200,000–300,000). Recorded in the Dauberville catalogue raisonné and formerly held in several Parisian private collections, the work belongs to the period in which Bonnard developed his intimate universe of everyday scenes, imbued with muted light and compositions influenced by both photography and Japanese prints.

Alongside these two highlights, the sale brings together several twentieth-century artists. A Venetian view by Paul Aïzpiri (estimate: €8,000–10,000) will be presented alongside Volti’s bronze Jeune femme allongée, cast by Valsuani (estimate: €6,000–8,000). Finally, a section devoted to the “spirit of Montmartre” will feature works by I.G. Gazi, Lucien Genin and Gen Paul, depicting lively squares, views of Sacré-Cœur and scenes of the Moulin Rouge, evoking the artistic and popular Paris of the twentieth century.

A Rediscovered Royal Provenance

Nicolas Nouvelet - Fine Arts and Decorative Arts, Past and Present | June 23 2026

Nicolas Nouvelet’s upcoming sale, Decorative Arts of Yesterday and Today, will bring together a selection of works and furniture illustrating the excellence of French decorative arts from the eighteenth century to the present day. Among the most remarkable pieces is a prestigious Louis XVI royal commode by Jean-Henri Riesener, delivered in 1786 for the bedroom of the Comtesse d’Angiviller at the Government House of the Château de Rambouillet (estimate: €15,000–25,000).

A rare survivor of the furnishings commissioned for the estate after its acquisition by Louis XVI in 1783, this mahogany commode perfectly embodies the restrained elegance and technical mastery for which the cabinetmaker to the King became renowned. The piece retains two significant historical marks: a crowned “R”, corresponding to the Rambouillet inventory, and the crowned double “G”, now identified as the mark of the Royal Garde-Meuble. Long associated with the Tuileries Palace, this stamp is now understood to refer more broadly to the administration of the royal furnishings. Together with its inventory number, these marks provide exceptionally rare traceability for an eighteenth-century piece of furniture.

Through this remarkable work, the sale highlights one of the greatest names in French cabinetmaking. Successor to Jean-François Oeben and appointed Cabinetmaker to the King in 1774, Jean-Henri Riesener supplied some of the most prestigious furniture for the French Crown under Louis XVI. With its elegant proportions, refined craftsmanship and fully documented royal provenance, this commode stands as a valuable witness to the splendour of royal residences on the eve of the French Revolution.

The Singular Vision of Charlotte de Saint-Gervais

Millon - Grands Interiors, Table Arts and Archaeology | 23 juin 2026

Click on the image to view the catalogue

On 23 June, Millon will present at Hôtel Drouot a remarkable bronze bust executed in 1876 by Charlotte de Saint-Gervais. At a time when depictions of African models were most often confined to ethnographic studies, allegories or exotic stereotypes, Charlotte de Saint-Gervais, barely sixteen years old, adopted a strikingly modern approach. Her subject is not reduced to a “type” but emerges as a genuine individual, captured with a distinctive and expressive presence. Far removed from the dominant representations of the period, the artist chose to emphasise character rather than otherness. While many nineteenth-century male artists focused on notions of exoticism and difference, Charlotte de Saint-Gervais presents her model as a subject in her own right, endowed with a palpable individuality and an almost fashionable elegance. The sale of this bust, remarkable for its modernity, offers a rare opportunity to rediscover the work of a sculptor determined to engage with a subject largely dominated by male artists, approaching it with a vision that is at once perceptive, sophisticated and deeply humanistic.

Modern Paintings and Art Deco Elegance

Nouvelle Étude -Modern Paintings, Antique and Modern Furniture | June 23 2026

Nouvelle Étude will present on 23 June a sale devoted to Modern Paintings, Antique and Modern Furniture, bringing together paintings, furniture and twentieth-century design. Among the highlights is Dans la vallée by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, painted in 1883 (estimate: €40,000–60,000). Preserved within the same family for almost a century and offered at auction for the first time, the work belongs to a pivotal moment in the artist’s career. The sale will also feature a previously unseen painting by Maurice Utrillo, L’Église de Saint-Bernard (Ain), dated 1928 (estimate: €30,000–50,000). Likewise remaining in the descendants’ collection for nearly a century, the painting relates to the period when Utrillo frequently stayed at the Château de Saint-Bernard, acquired in 1923 by his mother Suzanne Valadon and André Utter.

Decorative arts will also play a prominent role with an exceptional group of four pieces of furniture by Michel Dufet, one of the most refined creators of French Art Deco. The sale will conclude with works by several leading contemporary designers, including Élisabeth Garouste, Gérard Kuijpers and Vincent Dubourg, creating a dialogue between modern painting, Art Deco furniture and contemporary design.

From Old Masters to Exceptional Jewels

Villanfray Pommery and Baron-Ribeyre & Associés - Jewellery, Furniture & Works of Art | June 25 2026

Villanfray Pommery and Baron-Ribeyre & Associés will jointly present on 25 June a sale of Jewellery, Furniture and Works of Art, bringing together Old Master paintings, decorative arts, furniture and fine jewellery. Through an eclectic selection, the auction will create a dialogue between historical masterpieces, twentieth-century creations and collectors’ objects, reflecting the diversity of tastes that have shaped great European collections.

Among the major works is Argante by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (1591–1666) (estimate: €80,000–100,000). Dated circa 1645 by art historian Nicholas Turner, the painting is thought to depict Argante, the warrior from Torquato Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered, a heroic figure through which Guercino fully deploys the expressive power of his Baroque language. Old Master painting will also be represented by Christ Blessing and the Virgin in Prayer, executed around 1500 by a follower of Robert Campin, known as the Master of Flémalle (estimate: €12,000–15,000).

The jewellery selection will feature several remarkable pieces, including a platinum ring set with an important shield-cut emerald surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds (estimate: €30,000–50,000), a fine example of the exceptional gemstones and elegant settings that define twentieth-century high jewellery.

Masterpieces of European Modern Art

Millon - Modern Art | June 30 2026

On 30 June, Millon returns to Hôtel Drouot with a sale dedicated to Modern Art, bringing together more than one hundred lots spanning a century of artistic creation, from late Symbolism to the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century.

One of the most anticipated works is undoubtedly Le Casino de Nice aux Promeneurs by Raoul Dufy (estimate: €60,000–80,000). In this vibrant oil on canvas, Dufy revisits one of his favourite subjects: the Promenade des Anglais and the iconic Casino de la Jetée, viewed from above in a composition animated by light, colour and movement. Alongside it will be offered a rare work on paper by Paul Gauguin, Moses on the Mountain and Tahitian Women Playing the Flute, a double-sided ink and watercolour executed circa 1893–1894 and bearing the artist’s monogram “G” (estimate: €40,000–60,000). Coming from the guestbook of the famous Auberge Gloanec in Pont-Aven and preserved for generations within the family of the innkeeper, the work is appearing on the market for the first time.

In a very different vein, the auction will also highlight the visionary world of the self-taught artist Augustin Lesage. His Composition of 1947 (estimate: €40,000–60,000) perfectly encapsulates the rich imagery inspired by spiritualism, religion and ancient Egypt that characterises his singular oeuvre.

The living memory of a family collection

Artello - Collections+Design - Inaugural Sale | June 30 2026

Click on the image to view the catalogue

On 30 June, Artello will hold its inaugural sale at Hôtel Drouot, Collections + Design, bringing together an eclectic selection of twentieth-century artworks, design pieces and ceramics, most of them originating from a single family collection. Built over several decades by passionate collectors guided more by curiosity than by market considerations, this ensemble reflects a free and personal approach to modern and contemporary creation.

Among the highlights is Buste aux jambes fines by César, conceived in 1959 and cast in bronze in 1988 (estimate: €25,000–35,000). Created during the artist’s celebrated “Iron Period”, the sculpture illustrates César’s exploration of the human figure through a language balancing classical references and formal experimentation. The sale will also showcase the poetic abstraction of Geer van Velde through an oil on canvas executed circa 1953 (estimate: €8,000–12,000). A major figure of post-war art and a close friend of Samuel Beckett, Van Velde developed a contemplative visual language characterised by subtle tensions, simplified forms and an inner luminosity. Another highlight is a rare trial cast of Ventre blanc by Alina Szapocznikow (estimate: €5,000–7,000), reflecting the artist’s radical investigations into the fragmented body.
