EIN SEHR GROSSER ETRUSKER URNENDECKEL NORDITALIEN, CA. ENDE DES 3. – 2. JAHRHUNDERT V. CHR. bemalte Terrakotta, darstellend eine liegende männliche Figur, die sich auf ein Kissen stützt und eine Trankopfer-Schale hält; Haar und Chiton sind weiß bemalt, ein rotes Band verläuft über die gesamte Breite der Mitte und des Kissens; die Figur ist glatt rasiert, hat kurzes Haar, blickt mit weit aufgerissenen Augen und leicht geöffneten Lippen nach oben und zeigt einen neutralen Gesichtsausdruck 45 cm lang Provenienz: Privatsammlung USA, erworben 1890–1900 und seitdem im Familienbesitz; Thomaston Place Auction Galleries, Bildende Kunst, Antiquitäten & Schmuck, Tag 1, August 2011, Los 210, verkauft für 35.000 $ Etruskische Sarkophagdeckel gehören zu den charakteristischsten Ausdrucksformen der Grabkunst im antiken Italien. Der Verstorbene wird häufig auf einer Bankettliege liegend dargestellt, was die Bildsprache des Begräbnisfestmahls und den Glauben an ein Weiterleben nach dem Tod heraufbeschwört. Ein vergleichbares Exemplar, das Teil einer vollständigen Urne ist, wurde zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts in Chiusi ausgegraben und befindet sich heute in der Sammlung des British Museum (Zugangs-Nr. 1926,0324.124). Ausgestellt: „La Grande Horizontale“, TEFAF Maastricht, März 2017.
