N. studierte ab 1908 zunächst an der Kunstgewebeschule Straßburg, anschließend als Schüler von Emil Orlik an der Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums in Berlin. 1921 stellte er dort in Herwarth Waldens Galerie 'Der Sturm' aus. Von seiner Professor an der Berliner Universität der Künste wurde er wegen Sympathie mit der Sowjetunion 1951 entlassen. Er war anschließend bis 1959 Professor an der Kunsthochschule Weißensee.
