Igala, Nigeria. 59 x 26 cm Am Zusammenfluss von Niger und Bénoué war das vom Attah regierte Igala-Königreich Idah eine der Großmächte Zentralnigerias und stand in enger Verbindung zu Benin und den Igbo. Seine Gesellschaft beruhte auf einem System von Titeln, und seine Bildhauerkunst würdigte den Rang und den Erfolg derer, die diese trugen. Auf einem Hocker mit rundem, in der Mitte verengtem Sockel sitzend, hält der junge Würdenträger zwei Stäbe, die Insignien seiner Autorität. Ein sagittaler Kamm grenzt den Schädel und das mit Narben verzierte Gesicht ab; der verinnerlichten Sanftheit des Ausdrucks steht die Hieratizität der Pose gegenüber.
