Giovanni Battista Piranesi war ein bedeutender italienischer Kupferstecher, Architekt und Architekturtheoretiker des 18. Jahrhunderts. Bekannt wurde er insbesondere durch seine eindrucksvollen Darstellungen antiker Bauwerke und Ruinen Roms. Im Jahr 1766 wurde er von Papst Clemens XIII. zum Ritter vom Goldenen Sporn ernannt. Nach Erhalt der päpstlichen Urkunde führte er den Titel "Cavaliere" und signierte seine Werke fortan häufig mit "Cavalier Piranesi".
