Unknown (19th), Arcadian landscape, around 1800, Etching Unknown (19th century): Arcadian landscape with temples and chapels, The embellished nature, c. 1800, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Date: c. 1800 Description: From an elevated vantage point, the viewer looks out over a landscape with a body of water in the middle ground. A small chapel can be seen on the bank in the foreground, with a cross on the ridge of its roof. In front of the architecture, a few figures can be recognised, possibly farmers or hikers. Further buildings can be seen along the shore, including a pavilion crowned with a kind of palm tree and another building whose shape is reminiscent of a pyramid. Behind it is a fortified complex and in the background, in the foothills of a chain of hills, a city silhouette with another imposing pavilion. The landscape appears exotic, as if it were an imagined landscape in a distant land.
