J. ERHARD (1795-1822), A farmer on his travels, 1815, Etching Johann Christoph Erhard (1795 Nuremberg - 1822 Rom): A farmer on his travels, 1815, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Catalogue Raisonné: , 80, II/II Inscription: Signed and dated lower left in the printing plate: "JC Erhard inv. et fec. 1815" Date: 1815 Description: The artwork shows a hiker in a rural setting leaning against a fence. The man is wearing a long coat and a wide-brimmed hat, indicating protective clothing against the elements. His posture appears relaxed as he holds his walking stick. The foreground is dominated by lush vegetation, with detailed grasses and shrubs. A large tree rises up on the left, its canopy of leaves providing shade. A large rock looms in the background, leading the landscape into the depths. The composition conveys a calm, almost meditative atmosphere, which is emphasised by the fine lines and the contrast between light and shadow. Source: Die Landschaften im Geschmack des Molitor.
