F. BALZER (1872-1916), Mum crocheting, around 1900, Pen drawing Ferdinand Balzer (1872 Frankfurt on the Main - 1916 ibid.): Mother crocheting with playing children, c. 1900, Pen drawing Technique: Watercolored Pen drawing, Watercolor on Paper Stamp: Verso Estate stamp, Ferdinand Balzer Nachlass. Frankfurt on the Main. 20th century Date: c. 1900 Description: Confined to a corner of the room, we see mother and children crocheting together with their heads bowed and needlework on their laps. Absorbed in themselves, each family member devotes himself to his handiwork. It is so quiet that we could hear a wall clock ticking or the fire crackling in the fireplace. This interior scene radiates a peaceful tranquillity and familial warmth, which is also emphasised by the warm ochre tones in the patchwork ceiling and the floor. Ferdinand Balzer (1872 Frankfurt - 1916 ibid.) is known for his figurative scenes from everyday life and work as well as landscapes from the Taunus and his Hessian homeland. In 1892 he studied painting with Anton Burger in Kronberg, 1893-97 at the art school in Weimar and 1898/99 at the Städelschule with Wilhelm Amadeus Beer. While he was initially associated with the Frankfurt School, he later opened up to new trends, such as the Impressionist style of Wilhelm Trübner. Around the turn of the century, he began to pick up formal elements from Symbolism and Art Nouveau. Provenance: From the estate of the artist.
