M. SAVIGNY (1831-1905), Fish pond with vegetation near Mockritz, Pencil Marie von Savigny (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905 ): Fish pond with vegetation near Mockritz, 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: labelled "bei Mockritz" in pencil on the lower right Date: 19th century Description: Freda Sophie Karoline Marie von Savigny, née Countess von Arnim (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905) is known to us as the wife of the Prussian envoy and co-founder of the Centre Party, Karl Friedrich von Savigny (1814-1875). As such, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic trips and had to take on numerous representative duties and attend social events herself. The place name "bei Mockritz", which can be read on this drawing, leaves the possibility of more than one place of origin. There are three places in Saxony that bear the name Mockritz. The descriptive name, which probably derives from a Slavic term for "wet", "moist", probably comments on the location near bodies of water or marshy areas. Our drawing, which shows a small pond or even a lake, can therefore also be placed in this context in an indeterminate connection. Obscured by tall reeds on the left and bordering a small jetty on the right, the small body of water provides the basis for the composition. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 12,9 cm x 20,6 cm (5,1 x 8,1 in) Condition: Good condition. In age-appropriate condition with minimal signs of wear. Minor soiling visible in places.
