J. PEIPERS (1805-1878), The banks of the Rhône downstream from Lyon, Pencil Jakob Friedrich Peipers (1805 - 1878 ibid.): The banks of the Rhône downstream from Lyon, 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Catalogue Raisonné: , Inscription: inscribed lower left: "Ufer der Rhône Unterhalb der Darstellung Lyon." Date: 19th century Description: The picture shows an expansive landscape, dominated by a mighty rock on the left in the foreground, which is partly covered in vegetation. A tree rises behind the rock, while a calm river meanders through the valley in the middle ground. The right-hand side of the picture shows an extensive urban settlement with several buildings stretching along the river. The composition creates a wide perspective that draws the viewer's gaze into the distance towards rolling hills and mountains. The lighting is subtle, with delicate shading that emphasises the texture of the rock and vegetation. The drawing conveys a calm, almost meditative atmosphere through the delicate strokes.
