C. NATHE (1753-1806), The Walkers, Pen drawing Christoph Nathe (1753 Niederbielau - 1806 Schadewalde): The walkers, gentleman and lady, 18th century, Pen drawing Technique: Pen drawing on Paper Stamp: Lower right Collector's stamp, Lugt no.: 4041. Arnold Blome. Bremen. 20th century Inscription: Middle left inscribed by another person: "Chr. Nathe". Date: 18th century Description: Christoph Nathe received his first training under Adam Oeser in Leipzig. In Leipzig, however, the young Nathe was already offended by his preference for landscapes and contemporary themes, which can be explained by his rural origins. His family had given him an astonishingly high education, as they wanted to see him as a theologian. This is why he was described as one of the "most thinking" artists of his time in the obituary of the Rostsehen book and art shop in Leipzig. But Nathe also knew how to express himself in literature, and his interests included music as well as the natural sciences. Thus Nahte was also close to the great 18th century painter-poet Samuel Gessner. Our pen and ink drawing looks like an illustration to Gessner's "Idylls." Provenance: Sammlung Blome, Bremen. Verso: Study of a bush Keywords: Figures, People, Friendship, Fashion, 18th century, Romanticism, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 19,1 cm x 19,3 cm (7,5 x 7,6 in) Condition: Good condition. Occasional light mould stains are visible.
