Katalog der Gemälde, Bd. 1: 1911–1937, Zürich 1977, S. 234, Nr. 302 (mit Abbildung) Nicht die blosse Wiedergabe der sichtbaren Welt, sondern deren malerische Verwandlung stand im Zentrum des Schaffens von Max Gubler. Entscheidende Impulse erhielt der Zürcher Künstler während seiner Aufenthalte auf der italienischen Insel Lipari (1924–1928) und in Paris (1930–1937). In seinen Landschaften, Figurenbildern und Stillleben entwickelte er eine zunehmend expressive Malweise, in der leuchtende Farben und bewegte Pinselstriche die Formen bisweilen beinahe auflösen.
