Schon früh erhielt er künstlerische Anregungen durch seinen Vater und dessen Freund Claude Monet, der ihn nach Camilles Tod 1903 weiterhin unterstützte. Obwohl er zunächst anderen Berufen nachging, entschied er sich schliesslich ganz für die Malerei. Besonders die Landschaften der Normandie mit ihren Flüssen, Wiesen und ländlichen Ansichten wurden zu seinen bevorzugten Motiven. Seine Werke stehen in der Tradition des Impressionismus, zeichnen sich jedoch durch eine zunehmend eigenständige, ausdrucksstarke Farbgebung und eine lebendige Pinselführung aus.
