Hofer Karl 1878 Karlsruhe - 1955 Berlin Stehender junger Mann Tusche auf Papier (mit Wasserzeichen) Gerahmt 58 × 40 cm (Blattgrösse) Sammlung Georg Reinhart, Winterthur (wohl vom Künstler erhalten); seither durch Erbschaft im gleichen Familienbesitz, Schweiz Nach seiner Ausbildung an der Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe, unter anderem bei Hans Thoma, setzte Karl Hofer seine Studien bei Leopold von Kalckreuth in Stuttgart fort. Längere Aufenthalte in Rom und Paris sowie die Auseinandersetzung mit der französischen Malerei prägten seine künstlerische Entwicklung. 1920 wurde er als Lehrer an die Vereinigten Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst in Berlin berufen, wo er später als Professor tätig war. Während der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft verlor er seine Lehrtätigkeit, und zahlreiche seiner Werke wurden als «entartet» diffamiert.
