Antoinette Deshoulières (1638–1694) war mit Fléchier, Benserade, dem Herzog von Nevers, Thomas Corneille, Quinault und Charpentier befreundet; als Gegnerin Racines nahm sie aktiv am „Phèdre-Streit“ teil; sie war eine der Musen des Lagers der Modernen. Madame Deshoulières verkörpert – bis zu ihrer Bekehrung in den letzten Jahren ihres Lebens – einen besonderen Aspekt der Libertinage des 17. Jahrhunderts. In ihrem Werk widmet sie sich vor allem der Kritik an der Gesellschaft – sie sieht in ihr lediglich den Triumph des Geldes und des Ehrgeizes.
