DER HEILIGE GEORG UND DER DRACHE SÜDDECKSCH, ZWEITE HÄLFTE DES 15. JAHRHUNDERTS Geschnitzte Holzskulptur. Maße: 66 x 64 x 18 cm. Die Gruppe zeigt den Heiligen Georg zu Pferd, wie er mit seiner langen Lanze den am Fuße seines Pferdes liegenden Drachen durchbohrt. Der Heilige wird gemäß der ritterlichen Ikonografie des Spätmittelalters dargestellt: in Rüstung gekleidet und mit einem Helm auf dem Kopf, während das Pferd, das in Bewegung eingefangen ist, zur ausgeprägten Dynamik der Komposition beiträgt. Das Werk ist der Tradition der spätgotischen Holzskulptur im germanischen Raum zuzuordnen, wo das Thema des Heiligen Georg im Laufe des 15. Jahrhunderts besondere Beliebtheit erlangte. Der kompakte Aufbau der Gruppe, die Gestaltung der Rüstung, die kraftvolle Darstellung des Pferdes und die erzählerische Betonung des Kampfes mit dem Drachen lassen als mögliche Herkunft Süddeutschland in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts vermuten. Ähnliche Gruppen sind insbesondere im schwäbischen Raum und in den angrenzenden Regionen dokumentiert, häufig aus Lindenholz gefertigt und ursprünglich polychrom und vergoldet.
