Der deutsche Romantiker Friedrich Nery lebte über vier Jahrzehnte in Venedig und erlangte Berühmtheit durch seine meisterhaften Veduten, in denen er die unverwechselbare Atmosphäre der Lagunenstadt einfing. Seine Werke verbinden präzisen Naturalismus mit einer ausgeprägt poetischen, bisweilen dramatischen Lichtregie. Besonders eindrucksvoll zeigt sich dies in der stimmungsvollen Abenddämmerung dieser beiden kleinen Veduten aus italienischem Privatbesitz. Sie zeigen Cannareggio mit dem Palazzo Labia im Norden der venezianischen Hauptinsel sowie San Giorgio Maggiore, die südlich davon gelegene, eigenständige Insel.
