EINE EMAILLE-PORTRAIT-MINIATUR EINES HERREN (VERMUTLICH SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS), VON GERVASE SPENCER (1715–1763), DATIERT 1758 mit gepudertem Haar, zu einem Zopf gebunden, und einem blauen Mantel mit Goldspitzen; der Dargestellte ist möglicherweise ein Offizier der Royal Navy; die Gegenemaille ist signiert mit „G.S. f / 1758“, 47 mm, oval, in einem späteren vergoldeten Holzrahmen, mit einer beschrifteten losen Papierrückseite aus einem früheren Rahmen Die Anmerkung lautet: Sir Joshua Reynolds, geboren am 16. Juli 1723, gemalt 1758 von S.G. Für John H.J. Furse, in Erinnerung an Anne Elizabeth Price, 24. November 1848 Anne Elizabeth Price (geb. Palmer, geb. 1797 – gest. 24. November 1848) war eine Großnichte von Sir Joshua Reynolds. Ihr Cousin zweiten Grades, John Henry Furse (1774–1854) vom Halsdon Estate in Devon, hatte den Großteil von Reynolds’ persönlichen Unterlagen, Briefen und Atelierjournalen sowie Familienporträts und Zeichnungen geerbt. Möglicherweise verband die Familie Furse diese Herkunft mit der unbekannten Person auf dieser Miniatur und kam so zu dem Schluss, dass es sich um Joshua Reynolds handele. Gervase Spencer stand zweifellos in enger Verbindung zu Reynolds, der um 1753 ein Porträt von Spencer gemalt hatte; dennoch scheint der Dargestellte auf dieser Miniatur wenig Ähnlichkeit mit bekannten Darstellungen von Reynolds zu haben.
