Charles James Matthews – Unser einziger Komiker von Ape, 1875. Dieser Stich wurde vom italienischen Künstler Carlo Pellegrini (Ape) gezeichnet. „Vanity Fair“ trug den Untertitel „A Weekly Show of Political, Social and Literary Wares“ und wurde 1868 von Thomas Gibson Bowles (der seine Bilder mit „Jehu Junior“ signierte) gegründet, dessen Ziel es war, die zeitgenössischen Eitelkeiten der viktorianischen Gesellschaft aufzudecken. Die Chromolithografien wurden von einer internationalen Gruppe von Künstlern geschaffen, darunter Max Beerbohm (Max und Bulbo), Sir Leslie Ward (Spy und Drawl) sowie Carlo Pellegrini (Singe und Ape).
