Auf diesem Umschlag der Erstauflage von „La Der des ders“ (es handelt sich natürlich um den Krieg von 1914, von dem man hoffte, er sei der letzte) ist der Stil von Jacques Tardi sofort erkennbar. Um den ehemaligen Frontsoldaten Eugène Varlot, der zum Privatdetektiv geworden ist, erkennt man sein Haussmann-Paris, hier in die Nacht getaucht, mit seinem Schattenspiel, seinen Reflexen auf dem nassen Kopfsteinpflaster sowie seiner Dramaturgie von beeindruckender Wirksamkeit, getragen von einer straffen, filmischen Bildkomposition und einer absoluten Beherrschung von Schwarz-Weiß.
