ORIGINALAUSGABE und erster Druck. 36 Seiten Text und Zeichnungen von Rodolphe Töpffer. Der Text ist vollständig handschriftlich verfasst, nach einem vom Autor entwickelten Verfahren, das es ihm ermöglichte, seine Illustrationen beim Layout äußerst flexibel anzuordnen. „Der ‚Essai de physiognomonie‘ nimmt unter den Texten Töpffers, die sich mit Bildgeschichten befassen, sowohl hinsichtlich seines Umfangs als auch seines theoretischen Interesses den ersten Platz ein. Er stellt darüber hinaus eine Art künstlerisches Vermächtnis und den Höhepunkt lang gereifter Überlegungen dar “ (Goesten und Peeters, L’Invention de la bande dessinée, 1994, S. 85. – Mirabaud, Bibliographie des œuvres de Rodolphe Töpffer, 1887, S. 63–64). Ein äußerst seltenes Album in außergewöhnlich gutem Zustand.
