GIDE (André), 1869–1951. L.A.S. „André Gide“, [Paris] („1 bis rue Vaneau“), 7. April [19]29, 2 Seiten, kleines In-4 mit Umschlag, adressiert an den Kritiker Paul Souday (1869–1929). Er hat die „Centromanie“ (Kolumne) seines Korrespondenten, die am 5. April in der Zeitung „Le Temps“ erschienen ist, mit Interesse gelesen und korrigiert ihn: „[...] Es ist nicht richtig zu sagen, dass ich eine ‚äußerst lebhafte Vorliebe‘ für Montaigne entwickelt habe. Diese Vorliebe hatte ich schon immer. Sie fand lediglich in einem Artikel, um den ich gebeten wurde, Gelegenheit, sich zu zeigen.“ Er zitiert die ersten Zeilen eines Briefes, den er am selben 5. April von Thibaudet erhalten hat und die beweisen, dass er nicht für diese vielleicht „absurde und auf jeden Fall unverhältnismäßige“ Gleichsetzung von Goethe mit Montaigne verantwortlich gemacht werden kann.
