FRANÇOIS MICHEL AUBERT 1829–1906 Ball bei Marschall Bazaine zu Ehren des Kaisers und der Kaiserin von Mexiko, Mexiko-Stadt, ca. 1864. Fotografie. Albuminabzug, auf Karton aufgezogen und unter dem Bild mit Tinte beschriftet. Bild: 34,7 x 26,8 cm; Montage: 46,6 x 46,3 cm Bazaine, der 1864 zum Marschall von Frankreich ernannt wurde, befehligte das französische Kontingent während des Mexiko-Feldzugs. Er lernte seine zweite Ehefrau, die junge Maria Josefa de la Peña, bei einem großen Willkommensball kennen, der im Palacio de Buenavista zu Ehren der Ankunft von Kaiser Maximilian I. und Kaiserin Charlotte in Mexiko gegeben wurde. Bei ihrer prunkvollen Hochzeit im Jahr 1865 erklärten sich der Kaiser und die Kaiserin bereit, die Patenschaft für das Brautpaar zu übernehmen. Zu diesem Anlass schenkte Maximilian dem Paar ein außergewöhnliches Hochzeitsgeschenk: den Palacio de Buenavista in Mexiko-Stadt. In der Folge verschlechterten sich die Beziehungen, da der Kaiser den Marschall verdächtigte, gegen ihn zu intrigieren, und die beiden Männer bei der Ausbeutung von Goldminen in Konkurrenz zueinander traten.
