ITALIENISCHE Schule des 17. Jahrhunderts Der heilige Pius V. Ghislieri Leinwand Höhe: 131, Breite: 90,5 cm Antonio Ghislieri wurde 1566 (auf Betreiben von Karl Borromäus) zum Papst gewählt. Er kämpfte für die Verteidigung der Christenheit gegen die Türken sowie gegen die lutherische und calvinistische Reformation. Er wurde 1672 seliggesprochen und 1712 heiliggesprochen. Unser Gemälde folgt der Tradition des päpstlichen Porträts: Der Papst sitzt in einem rot-goldenen Samtsessel mit seinem Wappen und unterbricht die Lektüre seines Breviers, um seinen wohlwollenden Blick dem Betrachter zuzuwenden. Das bekannteste Porträt von Pius V. ist das Werk von Scipione Pulzone (Gaeta 1550–Rom 1598), von dem sich eine Version in der Colonna-Galerie in Rom und eine weitere im Erzbistum Olomouc (Tschechische Republik). Auch Giulio Clovio (Grizane, Kroatien 1498–Rom 1578) und Bartolomeo Passarotti (1529–Bologna–1592) haben diesen Papst dargestellt. Unser Gemälde ähnelt am ehesten dem Modell von Passarotti, abgesehen von der Abweichung bei der linken Hand, die in unserem Gemälde auf der Armlehne ruht, während sie in dem in Baltimore (Walters Art Gallery) aufbewahrten Gemälde von Passarotti zum Segen erhoben ist.
