Halls pinx. | C. Turner sculp.". Lower middle inscribed in the printing plate: "The Rev.d Thomas Twining A.M.". Date: 19th century Description: Half-length portrait of Thomas Twining facing left, wearing a white powdered wig and a dark, high-necked frock coat. The fine mezzotint print was made by Charles Turner after a painting by John James Halls and published on 11 January 1805. Twining was an Anglican clergyman and scholar - a member of the famous Twining family of tea merchants - and was known for his translations and his commitment to classical education. The depiction is simple and focusses entirely on the sitter's calm, educated nature. The sheet shows slight discolouration due to its age and a few pale smudges in the right margin. The corners are bumped, especially at the bottom right. The right margin is somewhat creased and there is a rounded crease at the bottom centre, outside the image. The graphic is minimally smudged at the lower edge, but the main motif is intact. The portrait is clearly recognisable and detailed, with a few scattered scratches in the background on the right.
