R. VINKELES (1741-1816), The Bassa and the Merchant, 1773, Etching Reinier Vinkeles (1741 Amsterdam - 1816 ibid.): The Bassa and the Merchant Le Bassa et le Marchand, Fable CLX, an interior scene featuring a group of merchants, 1773, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Impression Quality: An absolutely superb, harmonious print, with delicate, clear lines. Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "Vinkeles, del. et sculp.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "LE BASSA ET LE MARCHAND. Fable CLX.". Date: 1773 Description: An interior scene featuring five figures dressed in oriental attire gathered around a laid table in an open hall or a storeroom-like space. On the left, bundles of goods are stacked on shelves and on the floor; on the right, a woman or youthful figure sits with an outstretched hand. A bearded man in the centre reciprocates the gesture, whilst three other people listen to the conversation. Houses and trees are visible through the openings at the back, creating a sense of depth. Delicate parallel hatching renders the garments, architecture and areas of shadow. The composition focuses on the conversing group and suggests a narrative, likely literary or moralising, plot.
