J. PUNT (1711-1779), A quote from Socrates, 1762, Etching Jan Punt (1711 - 1779 ): A quote from Socrates ‘Parole de Socrate’, Fable LXXVII, featuring a gesturing figure in front of a house and a landscape, 1762, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Impression Quality: An absolutely superb, harmonious print with crisp lines and nuanced shades of black. Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "J. Punt del. et sculps.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "PAROLE DE SOCRATE. Fable LXXVII.". Date: 1762 Description: A standing male figure in a long robe and turban-like headdress dominates the foreground and points after the right with outstretched arms. His bearded face is turned towards the action on the side. On the left, a tall, curved tree frames the scene; on the right are a house, scaffolding or a ladder, several small figures at work and two people on the roof. Slender trees are arranged in tiers in the middle ground, behind which a vast landscape opens up. The composition is characterised by clear contours, delicate parallel hatching and nuanced chiaroscuro modelling. The caption and framing identify the sheet as an illustrative, moralising print.
