J. PUNT (1711-1779), A dilapidated farmstead with a round tower, 1760, Etching Jan Punt (1711 - 1779 ): A dilapidated farmstead with a round tower A ruined rural building, used as an illustration for ‘La Goutte et l'Araignée’, 1760, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Impression Quality: An absolutely superb, harmonious print. Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "J. Punt del. et sculps.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "LA GOUTTE ET L'ARAIGNÉE. Fable L. 2e Planche.". Date: 1760 Description: Within a rectangular frame, a dilapidated farmstead is depicted, featuring a round tower, a tall chimney wall and exposed half-timbering. The thatched roof is badly damaged; beams, doors and window openings are arranged in tiers extending into the depth of the picture. In the foreground lie stones, plants and uneven ground, whilst dense foliage frames the scene on the left. Two small birds enliven the sky. There are no figures; the depiction appears to be a setting in preparation for a narrative. Delicate parallel hatching renders the sky, masonry and shaded areas, whilst bolder lines outline the architecture. The contrast between the dilapidated dwelling and the tranquil sky lends the sheet a moralising, literary atmosphere.
